This is it - 2010!!

| | Comments (0)
Wow, a whole year without a single blog entry - mainly due to the discovery of twitter and other social networking sites.

2009 was a crazy year, but within the madness I think I actually acheived at least 3 of my resolutions!!

  • I ALWAYS opted for the dessert that came with custard (you have no idea how nice it was to have a crumble with cream last saturday).
  • We sold our house and now (after 2 other moves) finally own a house again in Coventry (come visit us).
  • I found several new outlets for leading worship (inc. Boulder Gang @ New Wine (amazing) & Junction7.

I guess that's the beauty of setting so many resolutions - in some ways it almost makes it impossible to fail!!

And now for this year's list  (and this year there are some real BHAGS - are you ready)...

  • Develop an intense hunger for God and a "Whatever it Takes" attitude towards achieving that.
  • Pray with my team (CYFC) more than any other single activity
  • Get to the point where I feel I can honestly call myself a "cyclist"
  • See at least 10 young people become Christians.
  • Re-explore the core essentials of marriage
  • Go snow boarding at least once
  • To face some of my stupid fears (I may even buy a pink jumper/shirt).
  • Grow bigger "managerial balls" (not my own phrase)
  • Start Blogging again (but not just boring rubbish - stuff worth reading)

Is that enough? I think so.

Get ready for my next post (and do hold me accountable - i think?).

New Year, New Challenge(s)...

I thought I should probably list my new-year resolutions on this blog, so I can kinda be kept accountable.

I always make loads of resoultions, in the hope that I'll actually achieve one or two of them, and there's usually a combinations of serious, spiritual and fun ones. So here goes.

      1. Read through the bible in 1 year (again)
      2. Drastically improve my lead (and general) guitar playing!!
      3. When offered a choice of desserts, always choose the one that comes with custard.
      4. Develop a habit of going to bed earlier (and maybe even getting up earlier too)
      5. Read more (especially around the area of spirituality and leadership/management)
      6. Find new outlets for playing, encouraging & leading worship.
      7. Socialise (even) more.
      8. Sell (or rent) our other home in Stoke.
      9. Try to use the word "one" regularly when referring to myself (just for fun).

And that's it. Simple huh?

The Cheek of it...

Wow, it's really been a long time since I was last here, which means as usual I have so much to report that I'll probably forget half of it by the time I get to the point where I may have considered writing about it, and if that is the case I can only appologise in advance for the small amount of detail that is missing regarding the last month of my life!!

Anyway, what was I saying? I forget...  Oh yes...

Aaaarrrggghhh!! I've now officially been waiting over 2 months for my new mobile phone upgrade - that's frustrating enough, not helped by the fact I decided to use Lara's 4yr old phone for a while til it came so I could sell my orange replacement pda phone (the one I lost in France) before it got all scuffed and well used. But now to add insult to injury, I called Orange on Wednesday and amazingly they said they had the phone in stock, it finally got ordered, and I worked from home all day yesterday excitedly waiting to receive it. However, by 4pm I was bored of waiting so I called to get a consignment number in an attempt to track the courier, only to find that (apparently) between being told that it was in stock again, and actually completing the order process, it went BACK OUT OF STOCK!!!   Aaaarrggghhhh!! So still no new phone and a very annoyed Jon to-boot.

So, what else has happened - oh, the CYFC exec agreed to buy me a spanky (nearly) new Macbook Pro, with a budget of just £700, and I managed to find one for £650 with a dodgy keyboard but 1yr warranty left so that got replaced for free, leaving me £50 to upgrade to the latest mac OS (leopard, for those of you that care). Owner/Carer and baby are doing fine, don't know the weight, but you get the idea!!

I would have totally written more about that if I wasn't trying to cover a whole month in one blog entry!!! (incuding the ebay purchase of an unsuitable operating system that I then re-auctioned and sold for a huge profit of -£19.00 (yes, that is a minus sign).

I'm gradually running out of beer. I bought a new kit like 2 weeks ago, and just haven't got round to it, so that's not much of a story.

Our new house is small but warm and the outside light finally works after 2 evenings replacing the whole lot and tracing wiring for faults - it turns out, you have to plug it in as well!! (oops) Lara actually made the discovery whilst trying to find somewhere to do the ironing. @What do you think this plug is for?@ she asks all innocently. Eureka!! (notice the strange quote marks... anyone that every changed from PC to Mac should find that quite amusing.)

And I've discovered a new found passion for the guitar - mainly through many nights with lack of an internet connection and seeing young people who can play better than me.

I really should have broken this down into several entries - do let me know if you need any more info on any of these points.

Oh, 2 other things...

Our house still hasn't sold, and now that our 2yr tracker has run out we're paying £200 more per month for a house we don't live in - GREAT!!

And Work at CYFC is going really well - a few interesting teething issues, but nothing that I wasn't expecting.

And thirdly, (for those of you that don't know where number 2 comes in the numeric system) Zak is having an amazing time at school - he gets so many stickers that we've run out of things to stick them to.

Oh, and fourthly, Lara now works part-time for St Matts as Children's worker, and Maisey has started going to nursery (the Maisey thing should really have its own point, but this is quite frankly getting ridiculous)

And I'll stop there.

Ciao people!!

ps. check out the new Cov YFC website - www.covyfc.org
Ok, so it would appear that I damaged my back whilst in the process of moving house (again) this week. Bizarrely, it was actually in the process of lifting Maisey to give her a cuddle, but I'm guessing it was mainly the heavy lifting thing that caused the problem.

And boy, did it hurt!!

Anyway, after my team told me to "GO HOME!!" yesterday, I visited the doctor and she prescribed some codiene (*sp) which is great, and now my back doesn't hurt as much, which is also good. I have to take "2 codiene tablets 4 times daily", and "8 ibruprofen per day" - which is actually the same thing but quite confusing when explained in 2 very different ways.

We also had friends to stay last night which was cool - guests to stay on our 2nd night in the house. Boy, are we socialites?

So I'm back at work now, and pleased with my back relief, but I did just scuff the bumper of my car on a bollard, which is VERY annoying.

Wow, that felt a little random, as far as blogs go, but hey, that's my ramblings I guess.

Ciao.

The All New Dull Blog...

| | Comments (0)

I just started a community blog (where any realyouth blogger can post stuff).

The idea, simply, is to make it the dullest blog in the world, EVER!!

And I honestly think people will find it hilly-areas!!

So, check it out, and if you regularly find yourself with nothing at all to talk about, let me know - I'll add you as an author and you can tell us all about it.

GENIUS!!

Jon.

The Bob Entwhistle Fan Club...

| | Comments (1)

Bob EntwhistleLast year, I had the immense privilege of meeting possibly the funniest guy you've never heard of, Bob Entwhistle. Now that's not his real name, but I figure if I tell you his real name, then that'd be like adversiting or something, and that's not allowed (in my head).

Anyway, if you have an event that you'd like some fun-clean comedy at, you should track this guy down. He really is a comedy genius. I may even have to start a facebook fan page. who knows!!

So, here I am, sitting drinking a chilled glass of homebrew, thinking about life, and wondering if it would be really bad to start on yet another bar of dairy milk. I decided to write a blog entry with loads of cool thoughts in it, but ended up just writing driville(*sp) about nothing really.

I think I'll give up and try again tomorrow.

Sorry (i really did have quite a lot to talk about, too).

I'm here!!

Really short entry!!

It's day 2 in the CYFC offices (for me) and life is good. Enjoying getting to know the new team. Working round the corner from Starbucks is EXCELLENT!!

The office is quite small considering we have 5 people that use it.

Hey, I'll see if I can post a picture of it on here later.

Anyway, keep praying for me (and that we'd sell our house quick smart).

Toodle Pip.

Miracle on Bath Street...

| | Comments (0)

So, you're wondering, why has it been so long since I last posted ANYTHING on this blog?

And the answer, quite simply, is that I've been in the process of changing jobs, moving house, going on holiday, Zak's first trip to the cinema, and performing minor miracles.

Now for more detail...

As many of you will know, my role at North Staffs YFC ended about 3 weeks ago, and I'm now getting ready for the next phase of the journey as I take up my new role as director of YFC in Coventry. It's all really quite exciting, but also quite hectic as we've been busy trying to sell our house in Stoke, which has been a right ordeal, with the estate agent constantly telling us to drop the price and people viewing the house with no intention of actually buying any house in the present climate. Anyway, we've now moved in with our good friend Rob until the house sells and we can get somewhere of our own to live - whether that will be in Rugby or Coventry is still very much undecided.

So, we've been in Rugby for a whole week now, and I've taken a huge step forward in the whole home-brewing department - I made WINE!!

It's quite amazing really, 40 pints of water, a bit of grape juice, sugar and yeast - and bingo, we have wine (after just 7 days). It really is a minor miracle (especially the fact that it tastes ok. Admittedly it is quite potent, and will improve over the next 3 months, but it's already quite palatable (*sp?) - since I bottled it on Wednesday we've (with friends) emptied 5 bottles of the stuff.

Right, There's plenty more to tell you about (including my bargain ebay bottles from Devon), but that'll do to get you all started again. More about the holiday to follow (hopefully including pictures).

Ciao for niao!!

The Beautiful Conundrum!!

| | Comments (0)
For those of you who are interested, our lives are even more confused now that 2 weeks ago.

and here's why...

  1. I still know that my time @ NSYFC is coming to an end
  2. I've applied for 4 other roles
  3. I've got 4 interviews!!
  4. 3 of them are within 48hrs of each other this week!!
  5. They all have good & bad bits!!
  6. God's definitive voice has not yet spoken on the matter!!
Here's the detail (prepare for an essay)...

I have an interview for a role in Bromsgrove (near Birmingham) working as a "Church Community Worker", which basically means that I'd be living in a house provided by the local church on an estate and working to forge relationships with the local community with the aim of sharing the love of God in practical ways. All very exciting, and closer to my family in Birmingham, so that's good too. I'm still not sure how "rough" the estate is, and have a few concerns about our kids (obviously) and how it would be for them if we're surrounded by vulnerable people for a lot of the time. However, the job does excite (and scare) me. The interviews for that role are next Wednesday evening and 10am on Thursday morning with a panel (including the Arch Deacon of Dudley).

I've also got an interview for the role of "Director of Coventry YFC". This is another one of those roles that excites and scares me. All YFC centres have their issues and having worked closely with several YFC centre directors I think it's fair to say that it's no 9-5 role. And I know Coventry's a big place which probably means spreading yourself very thinly between lots of churches, or working closely with just a few and going from there. It's also good that Coventry is right between my family in Birmingham and our good friends in Rugby. That interview is early on Saturday morning.

And I have been invited for an interview with National YFC in Halesowen for a role that fits my gifts and experience well, and doesn't even have a job spec yet. I'm really excited by this role -  partly cos I love the idea of staying connected to YFC, partly because it's 5 minutes from all my family, and partly because it's in an area of work I know fairly well now. However, the down side is that I'd need to raise 50% of my salary myself, and I have, let's say, limited idea how I'd do that. The other thing is, that that interview's on Thursday too, which makes life kinda busy. And I wouldn't be allowed (I think) to start until I'd raised the financial support, so how do you accept that job and not the others without any certainty of a start date?

The other interview is at Beverley Minster, which looks like an amazing church, but it's a long way from our friends and family, and the interviews aren't until July, so no panic on that one yet. It's good though that they shorlisted me, seeing as I didn't apply til after the closing date.

Oh, and there's also possibly another role in the pipeline, but I have no idea how much I'm allowed to say about that as at present it's anything but a done deal, so watch this space.

Anyway, as you can see, I have an interesting week ahead, and not a lot of sleep to look forward to.

Do I just take the first thing I'm offered?

Do I risk the National YFC role even without the security of finance (that'd be a real "God" thing)?

Should the location thing be an issue when I always say that God calls us to purposes before places?

Any wise thoughts (or just loads of prayer) would be much appreciated.

Bordering on madness!!

| | Comments (1)
I've just this minute finished painting our bedroom (again). After ripping down a small piece of the border around the top of our room several months ago, we decided that we weren't going to re-decorate our room as originally planned. But now with selling up and all, we figured we aught to fix the border back.

So, we went out and bought some new border, to stick over the old one, but then Lara decided that £15 was too much to spend on a border, so instead, she masked all the way round the bottom of the old one, and together we painted the old one RED!!

The only trouble was, that it took 3 coats, several hours, and looked awful!!

So, tonight, I've ripped ALL the old border down - red paint and all - and re-painted the whole lot yellow to match the rest of the walls in the room. (so no border needed after all anyway).

And why am I telling you all this?

Just 'cos I can't believe how long it's taken to fix a problem with 2 foot of missing border!!

oh, and I painted the toilet as well, so that's looking (nearly) finished now.

Other news - I was at national YFC for an event today and had a couple of interesting conversations with Roy Crowne & Richard Bromley re. my work situation.

Watch this space.
